I'm hoping there is trade route in KoH.
How about this:
At the very begining of game, there are some major trade routes randomy preset on the strategy map that trades between two countries at the opposite far end of the continent should be conducted on the route. Alongside the major route there are some small ones link to sorrounding countres. So there surely must have some countries which gain control over the critical joint points of trade routes and get extra tax bonus from the coming and going of trades. The more countries get involved in trade, the more benefits it will get, and at the same time make itself a magnet for attack from other AI. If war breaks out on those critical places, the income of trade of countries involved will be seriously affected.
As about the sea route there should be some ports where ships have to replenish fresh water and food.
