My cleric becomes pope

I was playing today with Scotland and pope died and I had expirienced cleric and he became pope.
At first i thought what a waste, i have lost good cleric. However, I think the benefits are great.

1. You can excomunicate anyone you wish (your enemy)
2. You can call on a crusade on your enemy with you marshal (Great)

However, I have called to many crusades :cheers: and pope excomunicated me
I do not understand how this happened - he is on my court

My spy became Pope. It was reasonable, though he was probably more deadly as rogue bishop converting Bosnian provinces to paganism. Still random excommunication again and again and being able to call crusades against an enemy despite being Byzantia was good.

You abused it. He will excomucate you if you ask him to do to much stuff.

It represents that, while the Pope is from your kingdom, and feels inclined to help it, he's not just a puppet to you (which is what a Spy Pope would be). While inclined to help, he can't wrecklessly excommunicate people you don't like, nor will he call crusades on legitimate Catholic nations, as it would be a religious affront to him.
