What are the differences between the Difficulties?

I guess it has an impact on the degree of the AI perfidy. What I know for certain is that when you play a battle on hard, the AI is still performing actions on the strategic map meanwhile (at least that works this way in the demo), which can be quite dangerous for you :biggrin:

EDIT: the game can be paused while playing battles on HARD, I assume it was just a demo feature not to be able to.

On lower difficulty settings the AI will attack with fewer armies with fewer squads and will even enter fights it can't win when it could avoid them.
Also, the AI will only very seldomly attack your last province when not playing on hard.

Does the AI cheat on (very) hard or does it just perform better?

It just performs better, uses more espionage and will generally tend to harass the player more or decline offers in audiences.
