unit limitations?

I'm playing as Scotland right and despite having stables and spearmaker improvements, I can't make either spearmen or any kind of cavalry unit. Is there something else I missed? According to the tech tree I should be able to construct at least spearmen but my units are limited to archers, Highlanders and peasants.

each town can only built a select set of units. if those units are not listed eitehr greyed out or colored in. then you can not build them and wasted money builting usless buildings.

A lot of the other units are found in the towns where they were most commonly used in real life. scotland is not known for spearmen.
