it would be a stupid question, but i cant really figure it out: do those arrows from my archers hit my melee troops who are fighting at the front?

I think so because there is a skill you can get that says "no friendly fire" at it's highest level. It's the skill that gives your archers an experience bonus and increases their quivers. (I cant remember its name)

Yes, there is friendly fire it is a mayor key to victory, because slaughtering your own soldiers isn't really the route to success  .

Also, remember that on Tactical Mode, each Archer unit can be clicked with a round button that says "Cease Fire". Yep, thats right, you can tell them to stop firing. That is obviously because you dont want them to fire unnecessarilly at your own troops.
