Retreat possible?

Been a while since I played this game, so I have a question for all you up to date folks, please:

I am fighting an opponent (not leading, just have engaged but am letting the computer do the work). I can watch the progress at the bottom of the screen. Occasionally, I am getting a butt kicking and would like to retreat before all my troops and marshall are killed.

Is it possible to retreat, and if so, how?

There should be a little white flag in the center of the battle screen.
Hit that, and your marshal will sound the retreat.

If you are leading the battle yourself, the easiest way i found (not proud of finding it by the way...heheh) to retreat is to give control back to the computer: Hit the magnifing glass(??) thing in the bottom-right of the screen to go to the 2d battle screen, then hit the white flag in the center.
