How are we going to fill up our ranks?
Recruited, like in Lords of the Realm 2, or "built", like in Age of Empires?

In Lords 2 the armies had to drafted from the actual peasant population, forcing you to chose between "swords or bread". A very nice twist.

It would be awesome to have that in KoH, and it would make population a very important resource, just like it was in real life.

From what i know the main problem with creating and maintaining an army was the cost of it, not that it would create a shortage of men, as over 90% of the population during the dark ages were made up of peasants. So I would rather go for the "build"-approach ...

i would rather take them from the population, adds more realisim, and it might actually make u value your serfs a bit more.

if alot of your pop. dies off you have no one to recruit. no one to recruit then no one to fight. no one to fight then no way to protect:(

exactly, thats the way it should be. this would make one look after the needs of there population which i think would make it more detalied....like when playing stronghold for example, i had a peasant population of about 80 and then an army of about 700, how this population could realisstiacly sustain them i dont know. i know stronghold wasn't trying to be realistic, but still:D

you may be able to turn the feature to one or the other at the start. just a guess. it would be a nice thing to be able to do that:)

I think that they should be recruited from the population, as well as needing food (and payment for the elite troops and mercenaries). That would be realistic.

I agree.

I think they said somewhere around here that there is an upkeep in gold for the troops, right?

And they should eat too. :D

There is no upkeep in gold yet. There is upkeep in food.

that will probably be true, as peasant soldiers will definitley cost less the other soldiers to up-keep.
